[Eventually, the visible seam that wraps around the Knight's mask - and the weird void bubbles that have been leaking out of it - heals over. Impossible? Maybe! That's the Barge for you!

Regardless, it's still a dedicated little worker the moment it's no longer actually tolling. It falls readily back into custodial work, though the sight of it working a mop is something to behold in and of itself.

It also spends most of its day in the Greenhouse, helping restore the plants and generally running around Aerith's ankles like an excited toddler (something she's very clearly not just permissive of but actively enjoying).

[And when people enter the Enclosure that evening, where the Knight has left the door propped open, it leads directly into a cool, dim cave with a massive head chained in place, its eight-foot-tall mouth leading directly into a large lobby, filled with curtains of hanging moss and more chains, holding aloft dead bodies of other bugs. There's a short drop leading to a warrior's resting space, with a hot spring at the far end; but past that hole is the colosseum itself, with a massive corpse sitting on a throne overlooking the oddly cramped arena itself.

As before there's a pair of weapon racks next to the arena door, both nails and simple human weapons for the taking into the fight, and in the arena itself the Knight has set up a few distinct spaces with brightly coloured ribbons on the stone floor.

(Everyone's free to use the Colosseum however they please, otherwise! Ghost is just setting it up for access's sake.)]

[When he's not in the Enclosure Alexei loosely follows his usual routine in between taking time to weigh in on ongoing repairs, but he's definitely not quite 'right'.

The Gym gets a little more punishment than usual - it seems like he's intent on pushing himself during his time there until his body seems like it's about to give up on him. Not every day, but enough days that someone there at the same time over a few periods might notice.

Around his current usual topics of study in the Library, usually centred around his post in Cybernetics, he might just be heard muttering 'this process is driven by the establishment of pluripotency and cell fate specification, regulated through dynamic epigenomic remodeling. Emerging studies have begun to unravel the intricate regulatory circuits governing regeneration in a cell-type- and lineage-specific manner. In this short review, we synthesize key findings from interconnected studies'-- before suddenly letting out a groan and bonking his head down on the table on top of one of the most deliberately dry research papers ever written (thanks Varker).

Coming across him in the Gazebo, or in the Dining Hall during mealtimes (still with his habit of sitting with his back to a wall and in good view of an exit) wouldn't be out of the ordinary, and late at night or in the early hours of the morning he's often on the Deck. Sometimes it looks like he might be... meditating? Don't worry about it.]

[Aerith has the camera panning over to the Greenhouse. There's glass that's been swept up, but there is…well, clear signs of a battle that took place after all of the glass was shattered. There's some plants that are still alive, but there's no sign of the shed, some plants have been torn up, and some of the trees are not in great shape.

Aerith slowly pans away from the mess, to her face, looking somber.]

We were able to save some of the irreplaceable plants- like Danny, the crab apple trees, and others- thanks to John Doe.

I have some seeds from this port. And potted citrus trees and aloe plants that I might put into the common rooms from now but- my seedlings in the shed are destroyed.

All that to say is- that it will take some time and construction, to make the Greenhouse how it was. Or at least…have an intact place.

I'll ask the Barge if there's anything she can do, or needs for this but…it may not work, since she's been hurt. And she sees things differently then us.

So…we're going to be busy. Thanks for your patience.

[Late in the evening of the 14th, the comms crackle back to life. There's a long, odd quiet. Not like static, so much as the quiet itself as a radiating presence, like wildlife falling silent after the crickets and frogs had long since faded into the background. Does the quiet sound a little like waves? You're probably imaging it.

What does he even say?]

Thank you all, for retrieving all who could be retrieved. For...taking care of each other. Mister Collins and Miss Slape will be -

[There's a moment that definitely sounds like static, or wood creaking, and not like a human throat getting choked up.]

We are...departing now, while we can. I have sealed the doorway.

[He sounds solemn, and sad, and very tired. After a moment, he sounds a bit more like his grumpy usual self.]

So don't try jumping in, you'll just break your ankle. Wardens who were assigned during the crisis will find their files as usual.

[Although the spiritual gateway is gone, the silver-washed pool in the 7th floor common room is very much still there, and will be extremely resilient to being drained of its few inches of water, which will remain miraculously clean, and consistently cool.

That's right. I'm thinking about hosting a LIVE ART EXPERIENCE, and casting auditions start tonight!

Think elegance. Think seduction. Think angels would cry if they saw it. We're talking painted bodies, silk, lights, smoke, dramatic poses, the whole package. If you can hold still, look pretty, and follow directions, you might just have what I'm looking for.

I have a question I'd like to pose to anyone willing to answer: if there was a choice between death or the loss of, say, a hundred years spent as a tree, which would you say is kinder?

If you could add your prospective lifespan that would be of greater help.

[Simon hasn't been paying attention to the network, so he is posing the question just because he's been thinking about it.]

[Simon is around the ship, though mostly in the evening shading into night. His time in the Nethermere and the trip back had been exhausting, so his body has fallen into more natural rhythms. He's continuing to work on cleanup, and continuing to display more willingness than skill.

He's not making anything worse.

Most of the time he looks like he has since he arrived on the ship, though sometimes instead of the appearance of a human man he's adopted something closer to his actual appearance. The edges are still sanded off to protect humans from the glamor, but he's far more brightly colored.

[There's the tall lanky teenager who has his hair pulled back, his eyes a hazel with more green then brown in his eyes. The set of his mouth is angry, his voice an angrier drawl as he started talking. Those that are familiar would know his accent comes from the American South.]

I get used as an excuse to berate someone. I have been lied to, repeatedly, because it suits that person's agenda. People here treat murder like lunch dates.

[Gold flicks into his eyes, and he has to take a few, deep breaths, shaking from the force of it.]

Y'all are supposed to be adults here.

Yet, y'all rip someone you'd call a child to pieces on the network because you can't keep your trauma in check.

I'm not saying he's perfect. Or blameless. He's upset me before, real bad with things he's done.

But- what was that? Aren't you supposed to know better, be better? Be role models?

[His voice goes raspy, and he takes in another few breaths. His eyes are a hard hazel as he continues, no trace of gold left. He continues, staring straight into the camera.]

[He waits a beat, then snorts.]

He doesn't waste any time before getting into it. His tone is firm and confident, and not at all like most people would be used to hearing him speak by now.]

I need some magic users - preferably only two, at least to start - and a qualified engineer for a project. [None of that 'well I read a book once and know how to use a hammer without breaking my fingers' nonsense. Professional qualifications or relative experience only. There will be questions to ensure actual capability.]

I have Sym's go-ahead to look at installing long-term protective measures in the greenhouse. Gustave will be working with me on this, and any directions will come from me first, followed by him. If that's going to be a problem, find something else to do.

[A soft inhale.]

I'll be in the greenhouse for the rest of the day if anyone wants to speak in person. Otherwise, you know how to reach me if you're interested.

[Then added, belatedly:]

A mechanical engineer.

[Definitely nothing to be concerned about in any of this. Nope.

He will be in the greenhouse for the rest of the day, and probably the next few days following, mostly making sketches and scribbling messy notes in French in a notebook that becomes increasingly stuffed with haphazard loose papers.]

[ John is on audio. Because John is fucking annoyed and his form keeps shifting visibly in ways that even through the communicator might cause a problem since the communicators don't come with the option for 'motion graphic visual content warnings'. ]

Let's address a few things: part one, Christopher Chaos is my inmate, permanently paired as of the end of the last month. I realize people were a little busy then, or might have been dead at the time, but that did happen. If you have previously had issues with him or if you currently have issues slash concerns with him or about him, I would ask you to come to me with them.

Part two: I am aware of the problem with Christopher's consent request and it is being addressed; to be clear, I don't consider it 'valid', as it stands, so everything with that is stopped and I'm working with him on it. I would ask that anyone who has signed a form retract it formally until we deal with the issues with the whole thing, especially wardens. If you want to talk to me about it, talk to me about it.

Part three: if you are a warden who is threatening him with violence, please bring your issues to me instead of to him.

To be very clear: Chris did not see 'everything' that was discussed, nor did he actually see any conversation between infirmary members about him. I showed him edited pieces of my own discussions with those of you who talked to me to try and help him understand why this line was being drawn and what the line was because you all understand it better than I do and I didn't want to put words in your mouth about your concerns, especially since I might get it wrong. Any personal information that was shared was removed, and nothing that was discussed between you in your group was read by me, let alone shared because I didn't view that as my place to be a part of that discussion at all. I was there to provide information and answer questions so you could make decisions.

To be clear: I do not share personal private communications. Ever. And I certainly don't share anything I'm given access to that I'm not involved in; I don't even read it without being directed to and I consider that something being shared with me and me only. I shared what I shared of this conversation because it was a discussion that was restricted to people involved in the situation, and I should think that Christopher does meet that criteria. I also think that if he'd seen your decision, obviously a response to his posting, without seeing you all trying to understand, he would have taken it even worse. At least this way he saw you all giving a shit about his feelings and believing me about his needs.

I do wish you'd pulled us both in for a meeting to discuss it before doing a public announcement, or at least given him a private message to explain to him that he isn't going to be attacked on sight if he goes to the infirmary [ and his tone says 'don't even try and pretend that's an unreasonable reading of things because have you seen that boy's post ] but what's done is done.

[He is not in the mood for this. He also thinks it's poor timing. He's only chiming in because he's watching people yell at a child and wants to give them a distraction. Maybe they'll even yell at him instead for a bit. He, well, he will hate that and probably just have to go sit in silence for a bit, but it'll be a better outcome than the current moment is providing. So with full knowledge that he's being a bit pathetic and tone-deaf, he begins.]

But, once things are falling apart a bit less, it's meant to rid you of misfortune and ward off poisonous influences. It might not be a bad thing to plan for. And, well, the food is a lot less fuss than for my mooncake team.

[Those who know Wen Ning well might be able to tell he's faking the serene cheerfulness. He's not generally a good actor, but he plays his own persona very well. This is Wen Ning the harmless, dutiful, and fundamentally clueless. His only safety for many years, now a shield against showing too many real feelings about this moment on the barge and, he hopes, distracting people at least a little.]

[ Vincent opens up a video conference to the infirmary staff very shortly after Christopher starts to seek out participants for Barge Coma Patients. His expression is grim. More than his stoic expression.

There's a recognizable difference today, is what this means. ]

Christopher has begun to request people fill out consent forms to allow him to experiment on them if they become locked in the coma some Barge passengers experience.

I'll be short. I am against it entirely. But people are allowed to do what they want with their own bodies. I can't stop that. I can't stop the boy's wardens.

[ There is only a moment's subtle pause. ]

I want to talk guidelines for what happens in the infirmary. At the very least, no one in any type of coma will be open to experiments regardless of their consent.

And for those who cannot come to the infirmary for the enforcement, another option that we can present to any wardens who monitor Christopher.

I also want regularly maintained records of these forms on file in the infirmary.

What are your thoughts? I invited Sheehan to this call. If he has time, I'd like his input on human factors. John Doe is also part of this as Christopher's current attending warden.

Christopher is still mad at John. But then John made him birthday Cake and his favorite food, and it softens the anger a little, even if it doesn't entirely cure it. What gets him knocking at his door though, is the existence of his file, and the overwhelming curiosity of what it says.

He doesn't care so much about the details that he knows, though it would be interesting to see what the Admiral finds important, he does care about what he might not know and if there is anything in there that he's been seeking.

John has forbidden me to go back into the Nethermere even though I would be totally fine and not a bird or a blob if I went back there. [None of these things are at all true.]

Please let me know that you got back on board when you get this so I can be aware that you did not die forever. Thank you!

[Christopher appears on the network in his usual, pink shirt, goggles and blindingly yellow rain jacket. He has gotten a little better about using the communicator, no more up the nose shots, but the angle is maybe not the best still. He has a stack of papers in his hand, looking like copied hand written forms, though the hand writing is rather neat, even if it's a little hectic and all over the place.]

It has come to my attention that it is very rude to experiment on people in comas without their permission, even if none of the experiments are at all harmful.

[He thinks this is dumb, because he wasn't even taking any blood samples(yet) when he'd been stopped, but some people can be so sensitive.]

If you would please take the time to sign a form to give me permission to collect data from you in the event of coma or death, this would help further my research! I'm going to leave them in a few places, but I will be keeping some on me if you would like to sign and return them to me at the same time.

[He looks so hopeful that everyone is going to sign, look at him and that big smile. He waves with the hand that doesn't have papers in them and the feed shuts off.

Christopher begrudgingly is helping with some repairs, if he's allowed, though scraps and things that are still laying around the damaged areas will be collected for either experimentation or future use. He does at times seem to try to be speaking to the Barge herself, concerned for her well-being in the aftermath of the destruction and harm. He wants to be friends with this ship so badly and obviously doesn't care that he may look like a lunatic, petting the wall and speaking to it softly.

His mood is all over the place though, so beware if you have something 'negative' to say to him, he might just be a huge brat in response or completely ignore you, writing people who aren't being 'helpful' as distractions.]

From being knocked unconscious by an unexpected Barge coma, to having vague memories of being knocked overboard, to waking up in his body miles away from the ship only to have the communicators down, to sprinting through the streets of an unfamiliar city to come across what looks like a Barge in distress, to the earth-shattering rumble that follows...

Well. His eye may twitch, a bit.

At least the comms seem to be working better when he gets back on the ship, which is covered in what looks like melted glass. And...there are bodies. All over the ship.

He sets out immediately in triage mode, once the actual threat's been verified eliminated]

[later, after he finds the hole at the ship and gets a headcount of his people, Thrawn comes on the line sounding testy and professional. His responses are clipped. He doesn't even bother to acknowledge he's been down for quite some time]

[The Knight is still on the Barge, and very much does not plan on going back into the hellscape they're parked on.

For many reasons, but the most prominent of which is - it died.

Technically. Kind of. It's complicated.

It's certainly tolling: the two halves of its mask are glued back together, somehow, leaving giant cracks wrapped clumsily around its head, and a few jagged gaps where chips had broken off; and wherever there's an imperfect seal, some black liquidy substance seeps through it and peels off of the Knight's mask, liquid-like and unbound by gravity as the escaping droplets turn into black, void-y bubbles.

It also just looks tired. Holding itself like it's on the verge of collapse - and occasionally giving up entirely and simply flopping where it stands, face-down on the floor.

(And as time goes on, the mask will begin to seal itself, the cracks slowly 'healing' and the bubbles rapidly disappearing; it looks fine very quickly, though to anyone who knows it well it's certainly hitching shoulder rides a bit more than usual.]

Katie Slape was lost to the afterlife of that port world. I was unable to rescue her in time.

This announcement is being placed up OOCly earlier than the event truly ends because Katie's death is not going to change; it was a planned loss.

I did put it up somewhat earlier than people expected to see it. This was due to some misunderstanding of the plot schedule and my own somewhat busy catching up status. Apologies for any confusion.

At the very least! Mods have confirmed that there is no circumstances in which 'Someone who could still have been saved' was left behind. The Admiral did not pull everyone out and leave until there was absolutely nothing left to save.

Any mentions of 'Vincent didn't get there in time.' or 'Plans to try and go back.' should be counted as-

IC: poetic and before he gets a chance to talk to the Admiral to clarify that fact and its lack of possibility.

OOC: It was a metaphoric placeholder for the idea that this was a planned loss between Katie's player and the plot runners and myself. That 'Vincent would have tried, would have gone to the rescue but did not make it in time (before there was nothing left to save).

I wanted to put this note up for those points because of the early posting and because it's a good idea to know that despite all the talk on the IC side, for those that didn't make it there's nothing left to save and Admiral would not have actually left anyone behind that was still 'there'.

If there is anything that doesn't seem covered by this update, please let me know so I can work it out and adjust as needed! Thanks!

It's cold in here. Or - not terribly cold. But normally I don't feel cold at all, and I do feel it here. I'm not sure if that's psychosomatic or if...death means the normal strengths of my body don't apply here.

It reminds me a lot of the Old Kingdom, for anyone who remembers - with the charter, and the bells. I haven't seen any waves or 🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️ but I'll keep an eye out.

[Open Spam, in the Nethermere]

Jedao can be found anywhere in the Nethermere, because he has to go everywhere in the Nethermere. He has three foxes with him, each with nine tails: one with a shining yellow eye in every tail, for eleven total, one with blood dripping from her chest and muzzle, shockingly vivid red amidst the bleak greys, whites, and blacks that make up most of the Nethermere's palette, and one that looks to be made of half-burnt wood, black and grey char with the glow of orange embers shining between the cracks. That one whines unhappily, clinging close to Jedao's side in the boats, skittering away from the water's edge elsewhere - except when Jedao is walking with the Long March, where it yips and snarls, skipping happily along with the procession.

From some angles, it's possible to see the drips of black ichor slowly oozing from his head wound; from other angles, it seems like he might have the faintest halo of golden light.

And the longer his quest goes on, the more past lives of his inmate he has to wrangle in tow - most of them shepherded fiercely by the Ninefox Crowned With Eyes and the Vixen Vulning when they try to wander off or threaten to stop right here if one of the others won't do or stop doing something. Every once in awhile, one of them will sort of....fall over back into line.

Can I count on your assistance when I return? We have no shortage of magic-users here but I would rather the ship didn't break apart under the strain of this phenomenon. John is unfortunately a little indisposed.

[On his return, Hythlodaeus does not so much climb out of the pond-portal as fall out of it with Simon's scrappy soul slung over one of his shoulders. This in itself isn't alarming, but the sheer amount of blood soaking one side of the man's shirt - entirely down his sleeve and covering his chest - along with much of the fabric being completely shredded, might well be.

He prioritises taking care of Simon first despite his obvious injuries. Only after that, and once he's sure the man is well enough to be left alone, does he do a quick check about the common room and the people there to make sure no one is in immediate need of healing and that nobody has been forgotten about.

His attention turns to other things after that. A steady stream of glowing light - something that those who have seen him perform magic might recognise - flows from his hand and into the Barge's structure, his palm placed gently against one of the walls. He's not trying to make a show, but right here, where the breach is the worst, seems to be the best placed to magically reinforce against the damage that he can see running across the entire ship like spiderweb-cracked glass.

Hythlodaeus can still hold conversations while he's doing this, though he's visibly distracted (and still half-covered in blood, though the wounds have been healed). A couple of hours in, though, he'll start to... sway slightly in place.

There's only so much magic he can put in before it starts impacting him, but he may just need a gentle reminder that he should stop and sit down.]

In which Hanna walks backwards into a portal to hell [Audio]

[Thr message he leaves on the network is meant to be brief, instructional. Hanna sounds tired, and he is, but fucking hell if he isn't upset and disappointed that the man he said he'd help if he could had decided that his 'trying to not hurt inmates' plan was to open a literal portal to this worlds afterlife and drag every dead person right down into it.]

Hey, Steven's emergency plan included magic prep for me, so if any of you need a guide back to the Barge, I left a big stack of those in the common room on sticky notes. Quick note is they appear as something you trust, they lead you to safety, and you don't need any magical talent yourself to use them. Hold the paper in your hand, think about using the magic, and it works.

Handy shit for times like this. I'm going in, but I'd recommend you kinda give me a wide berth if we cross paths. I'm kind of a magnet for weird shit so I'm sure my journey down will be exciting to say the least. Good luck, and remember, don't look back!

[The feed clicks off and from then on Hanna is rather difficult to reach. He's dove right in to go find Germaryah and nothing is going to keep him from getting that puppy out of there.]

The trip down had been eventful. He'd hoped that he could use Atticus to travel fast and avoid trouble, but trouble should have been Hanna's middle name. By the time he gets down to the Wormwood he's already used a stamina rune, catching his breath and sitting side saddle on the staff, thankful for it that at the very least he doesn't have to exhaust himself more climbing on upside down trees.

He slowly makes his way through, sometimes dismounting to avoid an obstacle, noticing nonbargr natives trapped in the wood, but he leaves them be. Death is the end for them, it isn't a failing of anyone, but the natural course and while this place is full of fear, of stuck emotions, he doesn't pity them. They rest because that is the natural order.

But Germaryah? No. That kid's ticket isn't ready to be punched, or at least Hanna doesn't think so. It will be his choice whether he stays or leaves, and as he checks his item, gets close he hopes for the sake of his own heart his answer is to choose life. He'd honor it if he didnt, but the point is he doesn't have to make the choice alone.
